The 2012-2018 dual-clutch automatic (DPS6) shudders and fails, and was the subject of a class action — a manual car, or one with documented clutch-pack replacement, is a completely different proposition.

- FIAT 500: Charming, tiny and cheap to buy. Two real seats, and a dealer network that barely exists.
- Honda Fit: Astonishing space for its size and genuinely reliable. Noisy, slow, and long discontinued.
- Nissan Leaf: Rated at 212 miles when new, but the passively cooled pack loses range in heat, so budget for closer to 175. A commuter only.
- Chevrolet Bolt EV: The cheapest usable EV range you can buy, with slow charging and firm seats.
