Charming, tiny and cheap to buy. Two real seats, and a dealer network that barely exists.
Check before you buy
Thin dealer network, slow parts supply and below-average reliability; the automatic in particular is not durable.

- Ford Focus: Drives better than any cheap hatch has a right to. Check which gearbox it has first.
- Honda Fit: Astonishing space for its size and genuinely reliable. Noisy, slow, and long discontinued.
- Nissan Leaf: Rated at 212 miles when new, but the passively cooled pack loses range in heat, so budget for closer to 175. A commuter only.
- Chevrolet Bolt EV: The cheapest usable EV range you can buy, with slow charging and firm seats.
