The three-cylinder engine is efficient but sounds strained when pushed.

- Hyundai Tucson: Touch-capacitive controls are frustrating with gloves or in a bumpy parking lot.
- Mazda CX-5: Rear seat and cargo are small for the class, and fuel economy is unremarkable.
- Kia Sportage: Class-leading cargo space wrapped in styling people either love or refuse.
- Ford Escape Plug-in Hybrid: Front-wheel drive only and not rated to tow, unlike its hybrid siblings.
